Rachael Smith
I currently stock about 14 different Ilford papers that I select from, depending on the artwork I am creating and how the finished work will be presented. I often work in black and white, for my last solo exhibition I chose Ilford Galerie Prestige Gold Fibre Gloss for its outstanding density of blacks, crisp detail and beautiful Baryta finish.
Rachael is based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, her business Rahera Photography, specialises in Fine Art Photography and Printing. Originally from the rural town of Te Puke, raised on a Kiwifruit orchard, she has travelled extensively with her family, and lived in Missouri, USA and Malaysia.
A strong advocate of the printed image Rachael feels the materiality of an image is incredibly important, as such printing is an integral part of her creative workflow, as is paper choice. Selecting the right paper for an image is something she values and invests time in. Seeing an image in print for the first time is an excitement she never tires of.
Her landscape and travel images have won awards within New Zealand and Internationally. An NZIPP Master of Photography with 1 gold bar, Rachael strives to continually push her creative boundaries, learn and expand her skills as a visual artist.
Rachael is currently studying a Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Art. She is also a Sony NZ Digital Imaging Advocate, and teaches workshops on creative image capture, travel & landscape photography, printing and colour management. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, skill and experience of photography, nature and travel with others. Taking a relaxed, welcoming and inclusive approach to the way she works, she believes in embracing the fun, passion and creativity that is in the art of photography.
